Wayne stops in to check on progress, with Marty Howard, Spencer Strickland and Howard Sathre.

Our raffle guitar is a 000-18/28 hybrid was built in the Gerald Anderson Lutherie at The Wayne C. Henderson School of Appalachian Arts. It is Honduran Mahogany with a Red Spruce Top.

Many thanks for everyone donating their time and resources to benefit our programs here at The Henderson. Kevin Wood of Crooked Road Hardwoods donated a beautiful set of Honduran Mahogany (body and sides) and Red Spruce (top) and this will be our first guitar to raffle off. Check back for more to come!

Our instructors and staff have also donated their knowledge, expertise and time: Dr. Howard Sathre of Bluefield, Virginia was our primary builder for this first guitar. Much thanks to our three instructors, Spencer Strickland of Strickland String Instruments, Josh Reese of Moss Ridge Guitars, Marty Howard of Howard Handcraft offering help and guidance with the build. Dr. Howard Sathre has taken numerous workshops over the years and is one of our instructors for the Introduction to Lutherie workshop, which begins May 12, 2025. Atwell Cersley is our devoted Shop Steward and helps out around the shop during our builds. Thank you to everyone for making this possible. Below are pictures of the initial build process: side bending, bracing, working on top and back.

Next step in our build is kerfing, fitting top and bottom after bracing is glued in…

The next step will be binding, working on the fingerboard, fitting the neck, pore filling and getting it ready for the finishing work.

The next step after taping off the fingerboard and bridge is Spencer giving this guitar a beautiful finish. Then it will head back to our Gerald Anderson Lutherie for the reconvene, thoughtfully called our “Put Together Get Together” where the necks are glued on and set up begins. Our Reconvene date for this guitar is May 19, 20, 2025. We will have more photos posted then.
